A senior Tyrant figure within the Tigrean People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the founding member of the ruling EPRDF coalition and the Minister and Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Arkebe Oqubay (PhD), flew out of Ethiopia for medical treatment.
According to a local radio station, he has travelled abroad to receive medical care for a leg injury. Most Ethiopian government officials and businesspeople travel to Thailand and Europe for special treatment. Despite the economic development and Ethiopia rising rhetoric, Ethiopians still have to go abroad for medical treatment.
He reportedly faced a leg injury after accidentally falling during the inauguration of an industrial park in Hawassa. Despite receiving immediate treatment in Ethiopia, Arkebe still travelled to Germany.
The number of government officials, who travel abroad for treatment under the current regime, has been increasing.
He was the mayor of Addis Abeba from 2003 – 2005. He is the board chair of Ethiopian Railway Corporation (ERC), Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC), and vice-chair of the board of Ethiopian Airlines (EAL).
Arkebe was an armed fighter of the TPLF guerrilla movement before his Front took over power in Addis Abeba. Although he spent most of his later years involved in the economic and developmental sectors of the current administration, he was part of the security machinery in the early years. The TPLF/EPRDF regime is accused of gross human rights violations and crimes.
The new Resolution by US Congressman Chris Smith, sent to the US Congress, proposes sanctions against targeted Ethiopian government officials, who have committed human rights crimes and tortures against oppositions and citizens
